Program Description:
CIEE: Intensive Chinese Language
The Forbidden City
Note: This program will not be offered for fall 2021 and is expected to return for spring 2022.  CIEE Beijing is based at Peking University. Founded in 1898, prestigious PKU has a long tradition of scholarly excellence and political activism. PKU focuses on advanced research in the natural and social sciences. The campus, previously an imperial garden in the Qing Dynasty, hosts 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students. PKU has modern classrooms and recreational facilities, many cafeterias, and easy access to mass transit – all within short walking distance.

With 22 million Chinese-speaking people to share the city with, there's no better place to hone your intermediate or advanced language skills than Beijing. In addition to immersing yourself in the fascinating culture and receiving instruction from respected professors, you'll be surrounded by awe-inspiring icons like the Great Wall and Forbidden City. All of this makes study abroad in Beijing an experience you'll remember forever.

This program is designed to help students improve fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese through intensive language training. Students can also take one course in English to enrich their understanding of China with electives offered in business, politics, religion, and culture.

Chinese language courses are taught by faculty from the Peking University School of Chinese as a Second Language. Area studies electives are taught by PKU faculty, other local Chinese scholars, and/or international scholars residing in Beijing.

Students agree to speak Chinese in certain situations to encourage language and cultural acquisition.

For a list of courses pre-approved for SU credit, please click on the "Courses Offered" link at the top of this page. There is no guarantee courses on the list will be offered during your semester abroad, so please refer to the World Partner website for the most up-to-date course offerings. If you want to take a course that is not already approved, Syracuse Abroad will assist in obtaining approval from the appropriate Syracuse University academic department.

Homestays: The option to live with a host family is ideal for students who want to establish relationships with Chinese people, live in a total Chinese language environment, and make rapid progress in Chinese language and culture study. Students have their own bedroom and share the living room, kitchen, and bathroom (some have private bath). Host families live within a 45-minute commute of campus. Family members speak only Chinese. Students are invited to family meals about four times during the week, and should budget for other meals, including lunch on campus.

Residence Halls. Zhongguanyuan Global Village at PKU has inviting comfortable accommodations. Students live in suite-style units with one or two roommates (CIEE students or other international students). Each student has a private bedroom and shared living space and bathroom. Internet access and share kitchens included. Meals are not included. Students typically eat at student cafeterias or at inexpensive restaurants on and around campus.

All U.S. citizens and most non-U.S. citizens are required to have a student visa for their semester in China. CIEE will provide guidance with the visa application process.
