Program Description:
Colgate Freiburg Study Group
Freiburg cityscape
A cultural and academic center in extreme southwestern Germany, Freiburg was founded in 1120 and is today home to around 230,000 people. Its modern reputation is one of eco-friendliness, as new neighborhoods were developed and built to be environmentally sustainable. The Colgate Freiburg Study Group is affiliated with Freiburg University and is designed to give students the opportunity to develop and polish their language skills in a German-speaking environment.

Program Details
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • SU required course load: 12-19 credits for undergraduate students
  • Advanced German language study required. Must have 300-level German language (five semesters or the equivalent)
  • Spring only
Program calendar
Spring only: early March to mid-July

Academics
Two required courses are delivered via a pre-semester traveling seminar, led by Colgate faculty. Conducted in German, the traveling seminar helps introduce students to contemporary German issues through tours of historic sites across German-speaking Europe. Immersing you in a German-speaking environment assists in the transition to classes at the local university. The semester at Freiburg University begins in mid-April, where you will take two to three elective courses in German alongside other German students.

For a list of courses pre-approved for SU credit, please click on the "Courses Offered" link at the top of this page. There is no guarantee courses on the list will be offered during your semester abroad, so please refer to the World Partner website for the most up-to-date course offerings. If you want to take a course that is not already approved, Syracuse Abroad will assist in obtaining approval from the appropriate SU academic department.

Housing
You will live in hotels during the traveling seminar, and with German roommates in dorms at Freiburg University during the semester.

Visa
All students participating on the Freiburg Study Group will be required to obtain a Schengen student visa. Colgate will provide assistance with the visa process. International students should contact the Colgate Off-Study office, as there may be additional requirements for students who are not traveling with a U.S. passport.

Program Cost
You will pay SU tuition and can apply all SU financial aid except work-study. You will also be charged a program fee, which includes an International Student ID card and services not covered by tuition and for which a separate fee is not charged. For further explanation of costs, please see the financial planning budget here:
