Program Description:
FU-BEST Freie University Berlin
Karina von Tippelskirch
Germany is a founding member of the European Union, and with over 82 million people it has the largest population among the EU member states. From Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire to Otto von Bismarck's German Reich, Nazism and the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, no other nation has molded Europe the way Germany has. The Berlin European Studies Program (FU-BEST) is located at Freie Universität (FU), one of Germany’s premier institutions of higher education. The university is located in an area called Dahlem, approximately 30 minutes from the center of Berlin by the U-bahn and buses. The FU-BEST Program is located in a large villa on FU campus.

Note for Fall 2020: Check out FU-BEST's free digital lecture series designed to give you a broad overview of FU-BEST’s academic course offerings and explore various facets of overarching issues and themes relevant to European Studies in Berlin and Germany today. Program Details
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • SU required course load: 12-19 credits for undergraduate students
  • No language prerequisite
Program Calendar
Fall Semester: late August to mid-December
Spring Semester: early January to late April

Students are required to take either 6-8 credits of intensive German or 3-4 credits of non-intensive (for beginners only). Most FU-BEST elective courses are taught in English, in such disciplines as cultural studies, art history, comparative literature, the European Union, German history, German and European politics, sociology/psychology, film studies, comparative religion, and philosophy. Course registration for the FU-BEST program takes place on a first-come first-serve basis, so it is to your advantage to turn in your application early. Courses and grades from FU-BEST will be posted to your academic record and factored into your overall GPA at SU.

For a list of courses pre-approved for SU credit, please click on the "Courses Offered" link at the top of this page. There is no guarantee courses on the list will be offered during your semester abroad, so please refer to the World Partner website for the most up-to-date course offerings. If you want to take a course that is not already approved, Syracuse Abroad will assist in obtaining approval from the appropriate SU academic department.

Living Arrangements
You have the choice of living in a homestay and or in student housing (two options are available).  Homestays include breakfast and dinner.  Housing is included in your program fee, but participants opting for a non-homestay option are required to submit credit card information as security deposit.

Please note the following regarding commuting time: all students in Berlin, both German and foreign, are commuter students – on-campus housing does not exist. Commutes of 30-60 minutes one-way are quite customary. This applies to homestays as well. The FU-BEST program provides all participants with complete coverage for local public transportation.

Please refer to the FU-BEST website for a full description of the housing options.

Please note: SU students are not permitted to "opt out" of the three FU-BEST housing options and rent an apartment independently.

U.S. citizens do not need a visa to enter Germany, but international students who are not from Canada or the EU will most likely need a visa in order to enter Germany.  FU-BEST will provide some support during the application process, but each student is responsible for obtaining their own visa. All non-EU participants are required to apply in Berlin for a permit which extends the customary 3-month limit on stays by visitors.

Program Cost
You will pay SU tuition and can apply all SU financial aid except Work Study. The program fee includes housing, some meals with homestay, on-site orientation, a monthly public transportation pass, events and a one week-long excursion, course materials, pre-departure meeting, international travel insurance, and services not covered by tuition and for which a separate fee is not charged. For program fee and further explanation of estimated costs, please see the financial planning budget here:
