Program Description:
AMIDEAST Area and Arabic Language Studies in Morocco
The AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program in Rabat offers a diverse set of courses and semi-intensive instruction in Modern Standard Arabic and Moroccan Arabic. Your classes will be at both AMIDEAST’s facilities in the bustling Agdal area of the city and in the buildings of AMIDEAST’s partner, the College of Letters and Humanities of Mohammed V University–Agdal, near the Royal Palace.

Program Details
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • SU required course load: 12-19 credits for undergraduate students
  • No language prerequisite
Program Calendar
Fall: late August to late December
Spring: mid-January to mid-May

Courses are taught by English-speaking Moroccan faculty members from universities in Rabat and neighboring cities. All students enroll in Modern Standard and Moroccan Colloquial Arabic. For your remaining courses, you will choose two or three electives from offerings in Middle East and North African studies in a variety of disciplines. Grades from AMIDEAST will be posted to your academic record and factored into your overall GPA at SU.

For a list of courses pre-approved for SU credit, please click on the "Courses Offered" link at the top of this page. There is no guarantee courses on the list will be offered during your semester abroad, so please refer to the World Partner website for the most up-to-date course offerings. If you want to take a course that is not already approved, Syracuse Abroad will assist in obtaining approval from the appropriate SU academic department.

All students live with Moroccan families. Moroccan families have been carefully screened by AMIDEAST/Morocco from a database of qualified applicants. Students usually are placed with a roommate from the AMIDEAST program into families who have previous experience hosting American students through AMIDEAST. You will be provided with all of your meals in your host families and will be given a stipend for lunch, as often class schedules prohibit students from return to their host families for lunch.

Program Cost
You will pay SU tuition and can apply all SU financial aid except work study. Besides tuition, you will also be charged a  program fee which covers pre-departure meetings, International Travel insurance and services not covered by tuition and for which a separate fee is not charged. For further explanation of estimated costs, please see the financial planning budget here:
