Program Description:
South India Term Abroad
Since 1990, South India Term Abroad (SITA) has offered the opportunity to observe and participate in the fascinating cultural environment of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India in the city of Madurai. With a population of over one billion, India is the world’s second-most populous country, and the second fastest growing economy in the world. Once the capital of an ancient kingdom, the city of Madurai was built around Meenakshi Amman Temple, a temple which plays an integral part in Madurai life and attracts Hindu pilgrims from all over India. Tamil people continue to teach and practice traditional music, dance, sport, and art forms throughout the city. Courses and extra-curricular activities provided by SITA provide students with the background necessary to understand the history and belief systems that underlie everyday life in South India. Field trips within South India supplement the overall experience by providing broad exposure to the cultural complexity of the region.

SITA caught up with Sahil Jain, an SU student who went abroad with SITA in Fall 2012; check out his blog post here.

Program Details
  • Minimum GPA: 2.5
  • SU required course load: 12-19 credits for undergraduate students
  • Language requirement: must take elementary functional Tamil
    • No previous Tamil language coursework and/or skills are necessary
Program Calendar
Fall Semester: mid-August to early December
Spring Semester: early January to mid-April

Students will take three required courses and two electives. The required courses are Elementry Functional Tamil, Ethnographic Methods & Theory, and Research in Madurai. You are open to take two of the electives SITA offers, but they must be pre-approved by Syracuse. Grades from SITA will be posted to your academic record and factored into your overall GPA at SU.

For a list of courses pre-approved for SU credit, please click on the "Courses Offered" link at the top of this page. There is no guarantee courses on the list will be offered during your semester abroad, so please refer to the World Partner website for the most up-to-date course offerings. If you want to take a course that is not already approved, Syraucse Abroad will assist in obtaining approval from the appropriate SU academic department.

SITA students are placed with a host family for the semester and are treated as regular family members by their hosts. They are expected to dress and act in ways appropriate to the context of Mandurai life. SITA matches students with host families based on student applications, taking into account their backgrounds, interests, diet, and transportation preferences. Most host families' homes are within cycling distance, or an easy walk or bus ride, from the SITA Center. Students eat breakfast and dinner with their host families.

All U.S. citizens and most non-U.S. citizens are required to have a student visa for their semester in India. SITA will provide assistance with the visa application process.

Program Cost
You will pay SU tuition and can apply all SU financial aid except work study. Besides tuition, you will also be charged a program fee which covers housing, pre-departure meetings, International Student ID card and services not covered by tuition and for which a separate fee is not charged.
