Program Description:
CET Art Photography at FAMU
FAMU photography
Spend a semester at FAMU, the Film and Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts. Among the oldest and finest film academies in the world, FAMU has played an integral role in Czech cultural history, fostering the New Wave of the 1960s and serving as a headquarters for the student-led Velvet Revolution that brought an end to communist rule in Czechoslovakia. Besides your course work, several trips and activities are planned while you are in Prague. Past activities included guided visits to Prague Castle, the Jewish Quarter, the Czech Parliament and Radio Free Europe. Each semester includes an overnight excursion to Cesky Krumlov, a medieval/renaissance castle town on the Austrian border, featuring the world’s best-preserved baroque theater.

Spring 2021 update: Please refer to the CET website for Spring 2021 program modifications.

Program Calendar
Fall Semester: late August to mid-December
Spring Semester: late January to mid-May

You will enroll in two core courses: Fine Art Photography & Workshop and Imagery, Ambiguity and Culture. In addition, you will take a required Czech language course and two or three elective courses from FAMU’s international program. The core courses focus on analog techniques and darkroom developing. The electives specialize in areas such as digital photography, still life and restoration. All courses (besides Czech language) are taught in English. Several non-credit workshops are also offered each semester. Courses and grades will be posted to your academic record and factored into your overall GPA at SU.

For a list of courses pre-approved for SU credit, please click on the "Courses Offered" link at the top of this page. There is no guarantee courses on the list will be offered during your semester abroad, so please refer to the World Partner website for the most up-to-date course offerings. If you want to take a course that is not already approved, Syracuse Abroad will assist in obtaining approval from the appropriate SU academic department.

You will share spacious, centrally located apartments with other CET students, as well as local Czech students. Apartments are fully furnished and offer washing machines, equipped kitchens and wifi. Housing, not meal cost, is included in the program fee. Students dine in Prague’s many eateries, or cook for themselves at home.

Students are required to have a student visa in order to enter the country. CET provides assistance with the visa application process and requires that you have a valid passport at the time of applying.

Program Costs
You will pay SU tuition and can apply all SU financial aid except work-study. You are also charged a program fee that includes: housing, study trips, excursions and activities in and around Prague, transportation pass, cellphone for duration of program, medical insurance, visa fees, pre-departure meeting and international travel insurance. For the most recent program fee and further explanation of estimated costs, please see the financial planning budget here:
