Program Description:
CET New Media and Audiovisual Studies at FAMU
Prague New Media

Spend a semester at FAMU, the Film and Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts, taking courses in video installation, conceptual artworks, experimental documentary, expanded-to-database cinema, intermedia performance or interactive work. Among the oldest and finest film academies in the world, FAMU has played an integral role in Czech cultural history, fostering the New Wave of the 1960s and serving as a headquarters for the student-led Velvet Revolution that brought an end to communist rule in Czechoslovakia. You will also have opportunities to attend special events such as concerts, new media art festivals, cultural events, film festivals, after-parties and social activities with artist peers and Czech students, and exclusive lectures from members of Prague's art community. In addition, at the beginning of the semester, students take an overnight trip to Ceský Krumlov, a beautiful medieval castle town on the Austrian border.

Spring 2021 update: Please refer to the CET website for Spring 2021 program modifications.

Spring Semester: late January to mid-May

There are two required core courses: New Media Mentorship and New Media Workshop. In addition, students take a required Czech language course and two to four elective courses from FAMU’s international program. Students also have the opportunity to work on installations with interactive video, locative and mobile media, code-based projects, multi-channel and multi-threaded sound and images. Students can also explore the local Prague arts scene, exhibit works at a local gallery, and receive hands-on mentorship and critique sessions with FAMU faculty and visiting artists. The program is small and specifically designed for new media or intermedia artists. All courses will be taught in English except for the Czech language course.

For a list of courses pre-approved for SU credit, please click on the "Courses Offered" link at the top of this page. There is no guarantee courses on the list will be offered during your semester abroad, so please refer to the World Partner website for the most up-to-date course offerings. If you want to take a course that is not already approved, Syracuse Abroad will assist in obtaining approval from the appropriate SU academic department.

You are housed with fellow CET students and local students in an apartment in a Czech residential building. Apartments are fully furnished, with washing machines, equipped kitchens, and Wifi. As a modern European city, Prague has an extensive and efficient public transportation system. CET provides students with transportation passes for the semester, allowing you to ride the trains, buses, and trams for free. Housing, not meal cost, is included in the program fee. Students dine in Prague’s many eateries, or cook for themselves at home.

Students are required to have a student visa in order to enter the country. CET provides assistance with the visa application process and requires that you have a valid passport at the time of applying.
