Program Description:
Fordham in Pretoria
Located in the northern part of South Africa, Pretoria is the executive capital of the country and is home to many senior diplomats and politicians. A city full of diverse cultural influences and architecture, Pretoria ranges from British Colonial to Art Deco, with a variety of uniquely South African forms. In the past few decades, South Africa’s transformation had captured the attention of people around the world, and in recent years students have sought educational opportunities abroad in this emerging democratic nation. The Fordham in Pretoria program offers students a structured and supportive environment for study and engagement with the South Africa people and their history. Students will tackle questions of life, justice, faith, personal beliefs, poverty, and sociology. The program is based at the University of Pretoria, the leading research university in South Africa.

Program Calendar
Spring Semester: late January to late June

There are two required courses that integrate a service-learning component plus two elective courses from the University of Pretoria offerings. There are a number of field trips and excursions to Soweto, Nelson Mandela’s house in Johannesburg, and a weeklong visit to Cape Town. A typical course load is four courses although it is possible to take five courses. Grades from Fordham will be posted to your academic record and factored into your overall GPA at SU.

For a list of courses pre-approved for SU credit, please click on the "Courses Offered" link at the top of this page. There is no guarantee courses on the list will be offered during your semester abroad, so please refer to the World Partner website for the most up-to-date course offerings. If you want to take a course that is not already approved, Syracuse Abroad will assist in obtaining approval from the appropriate SU academic department.

Students will live in apartments at the Capital Village in Hatfield Guesthouse, within walking distance to the University of Pretoria.

All U.S. Citizens and most non-U.S. citizens are required to have a student visa for their semester in South Africa. Fordham will provide assistance with the visa application process.
