The University of the West Indies (UWI) began in Jamaica as the University College of the West Indies under a special relationship with the University of London. It gained University status in 1962 and now serves 15 English-speaking Caribbean countries with four Campuses; these are Mona in Jamaica, Open Campus, St. Augustine in Trinidad and Cave Hill in Barbados. It is also the region’s premier educational institution offering a wide range of programs of study. UWI programs of study have a strong emphasis on the Caribbean, making it the ideal educational institution for students with an interest in Caribbean history and development.

Grades from UWI will be posted to your academic record and factored into your overall GPA at SU.

For a list of courses pre-approved for SU credit, please click on the Courses Offerings button on this page. There is no guarantee courses on the list will be offered during your semester abroad, so please refer to the World Partner website for the most up-to-date course offerings. If you want to take a course that is not already approved, Syracuse Abroad will assist in obtaining approval from the appropriate SU academic department.

On the Mona campus, housing is normally provided for international students at one of the Residence Halls. Students are required to indicate on their application their hall of preference. Please refer to the Student Accommodation page for more information.

Citizens of non-Commonwealth Countries must obtain a valid Student Visa prior to entry into any UWI Campus country (Jamaica, Barbados or Trinidad & Tobago). Such persons should make their requests at the nearest Diplomatic Mission or Consular Office representing the relevant country.
