Program Description:
European University at St. Petersburg
The European University at St. Petersburg (EUSP) is a non-state, independent, graduate university founded in 1994 for the purpose of advancing training and research in economics, anthropology, history, political science, sociology, and art history. It is the only university in Russia which offers international study programs in English to students from North America, Western Europe, and other parts of the world. EUSP offers several options to those wishing to study and conduct research in St. Petersburg. Graduate students may obtain a certificate in the IMARES (International MA in Russia and Eurasian Studies) or ENERPO (Energy Politics in Russia) programs. English is the language of instruction for both programs with the option of some courses taught in Russian. EUSP programs for international students are administered by the International Programs Office.

Program Details
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • SU required course load: 9 credits for graduate students (12 for ENERPO students)
  • Graduate international relations students only
Program Calendar
Fall: early September to early January
Spring: early February to late June

Credits are determined by contact hours. Typically a course will be 3 or 4 credits. If you are interested in the certificate under the IMARES program, you are required to take on full residence unit and 9 credits per semester. For the ENERPO program, you must enroll in 12 credits. Grades from EUSP will be posted to your academic record and factored into your overall GPA at SU.

For a list of courses pre-approved for SU credit, please click on the "Courses Offered" link at the top of this page. There is no guarantee courses on the list will be offered during your semester abroad, so please refer to the World Partner website for the most up-to-date course offerings. If you want to take a course that is not already approved, Syracuse Abroad will assist in obtaining approval from the appropriate SU academic department.

A few spots are available at the EUSP dormitory in the center of the city, but most students rent a room from Russian families or share an apartment with other students.

All U.S. Citizens and most non-U.S. citizens are required to have a student visa for their semester in Russia. EUSP will provide assistance with the visa application process.

Program Cost
You will pay SU tuition and can apply all SU financial aid. A program fee which you pay to SU includes an International Student ID card, a pre-departure meeting, and services not covered by tuition and for which a separate fee is not charged.
